- Description
- SUMMARY: This interview is with Ms. Sonia Umanzor, Community Affairs Director of the Embassy of El Salvador in Washington, DC. Ms. Umanzor is a member of the leftist Frente Farabundo Mart para la Liberacin Nacional (FMLN), which was the rebel group during the Salvadoran Civil War that ended in 1992 with the Chapultepec Peace Accords. The interview describes her life in rural El Salvador, as well as her experiences with the guerrillas during the brutal war, and her arrival in the United States. PROJECT’S OBJECTIVES: The interviews conducted as part of the DC Oral History and Social Justice Project record how unhoused residents of the greater DC area view the history of homelessness – how did homelessness become such an entrenched part of the city. The interviews will be used to create critical dialogue among people who are currently unhoused in Washington, DC, and then they may be used to assist future advocacy efforts.
