- Description
- BH Whitehurst shares how COVID has affected her. She explains how this "unseen enemy" has been giving her trouble, particularly related to her struggles with GERD. She reflects on how the virus has affected the whole world, "from the least of us to the greatest of us." She cites her belief in religion as the reason that we will survive this: we need to "keep our mind on Him, and not on this invisible, evil force." - Indigenous Maya Women Speak Mam Next To A Roman Catholic Church In Rural Hueheuetenango
- Date
- 1982-09-01
- Creator
- Nickelsberg, Robert
- Description
- Indigenous Maya women speak Mam as they sit next to a Roman Catholic church in rural Huehuetenango, Guatemala, September 1, 1982. The Mam peoples live primarily in the western highlands of Guatemala and southwestern Mexico. Catholicism was introduced to the region during the Spanish colonization of the Americas. In the following centuries, forced conversion and other methods to indoctrinate indigenous communities into the Roman Catholic Church produced a syncretism of Catholicism and native Maya traditions.

- Memorial Service For U.S. Churchwomen Killings
- Date
- 1983-12-02
- Creator
- Nickelsberg, Robert
- Description
- An unidentified member of the United States clergy offers communion on the third anniversary of the killing of four U.S. churchwomen in La Libertad, El Salvador, December 2, 1983. On December 2, 1980, Maryknoll sisters Maura Clarke and Ita Ford, Ursuline nun Dorothy Kazel, and lay missionary Jean Donovan were abducted, sexually abused, and executed near the airport in San Salvador by soldiers of the National Guard. The case figured prominently in debate in the United States Congress over whether El Salvador should continue to receive military aid. Several Salvadoran military officials, including then-head of the National Guard General Carlos Eugenio Vides Casanova and then-Minister of Defense General José Guillermo García, were later found to have “assisted or otherwise participated in” attempts to cover up the killings.

- Description
- An indigenous Maya woman prays during the open air mass by Pope John Paul ll in Guatemala City, Guatemala, March 7, 1983. During his visit to Guatemala on a tour of Central America, the Pope condemned the ongoing violence and persecution of the country's indigenous Maya population. In the 36-year domestic armed conflict lasting from 1960 to 1996, an estimated 200,000 people were killed, up to 45,000 civilians were forcibly disappeared, and between 500,000 and 1.5 million people were internally displaced or fled the country. 83 percent of the victims were indigenous Maya people.

- Description
- A large cross is raised by a work crew during preparations for an open air mass by Pope John Paul ll in Guatemala City, Guatemala, March 7, 1983. During his visit to Guatemala on a tour of Central America, the Pope condemned the ongoing violence and persecution of the country's indigenous Maya population. Guatemala was introduced to Catholicism during the Spanish colonization of the Americas in the 16th century, and the Roman Catholic Church has dominated the country's religious society. However by the mid-1980s, Protestantism and particularly the evangelical movement was gaining popularity and it is estimated that Protestants accounted for approximately one third of Guatemala's total population at that time.

- Description
