- Ana Esteve Llorens Interview, May 20, 2020
- Date
- May 20, 2020
- Creator
- Ana Esteve Llorens; Naoko Wowsugi
- Description
- Visual artist Ana Esteve Llorens, who is originally from Spain but now resides in Austin, TX, shares how COVID has impacted her. The pandemic has both changed and not changed her life: she has had to reinvent how she relates to her family, friends, and students, but as an artist working alone in her studio, she believes that the loneliness many are feeling is not new to her. Ana's passion for creating art has been a primary motivation, as well as her network of friends. She says that we must keep hope alive, and talks about how she has come to appreciate the things she had taken for granted before, such as "the rhythms dictated by nature". Ana ends by saying that she's positive we'll make it out of this crisis. - Antonious Bui Interview, May 14, 2020
- Date
- May 14, 2020
- Creator
- Antonious Bui; Naoko Wowsugi; Naoko Wowsugi
- Description
- Artist Antonious Bui, a fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA discusses the impact of COVID-19. Antonious shares how, as a cultural worker, there have been a number of postponements and cancellations that have impacted the ability of fellows at the Fine Arts Work Center to work collaboratively in person. Antonious discusses how the pandemic presented an opportunity to critique institutions and demand a more equitable future, thanking the Fine Arts Work Center for responding to demands for stipend and stay increases. Antonious talks about how family, loved ones, and other artists have provided invaluable support, and also shares how it's been inspiring to see how the pandemic can provide a model for collective movement on other issues like the climate crisis. Antonious ends by hoping that we see how our "normal" is unsustainable, as it only serves the richest and most privileged. We need to recognize that we are not all equal, and that we all need to continue to pay attention to understand that collective movement -- and art -- is more important than ever. - Creator
- Ashlie Gorman; Alexis Zilen
- Description
- The idea of a “new normal” has become common rhetoric within the United States as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This new normal includes not only updated health consciousness but larger structural transformations in economics and politics. This project will focus on a few microcosms of transformation; the rise of unemployment and the impact of the creative arts, and the effects of mental health during the ongoing pandemic. Overall, this interview between Ashlie Gorman and Alexis Zilen will provide insight into the new normal and the transformation of American creative culture during the pandemic.

- Autumn Moon at Tama River/玉川秋月 (Tamagawa Akitsuki)
- Creator
- Utagawa Hiroshige/ 歌川広重 (Signature: Hiroshige ga/ 広重画)
- Description
- Nishiki-e (Multicolored Print), ink and color on paper. Fishermen line the softly sloped shores of Tama river. Willow tree branches blow delicately in the wind along with sparse river grasses. In the back the full moon hangs over the scene. In other versions of this print the moon is rendered with mica which is a metallic pigment that creates a striking shimmer in the print. The Tama river ran along Edo’s western border and in opposition to the Sumida that ran through the city and had metropolitan associations, the Tama had more rustic, poetic associations. It evokes images of the empty Musashino moor and the autumn moon. Poem signed Asanoyadō Massugu: The image of the moon in the autumn night which is luminous as day/ lingers on the Tama stream as the river lingers by the Twin Pines. - Buddy Moore Interview, November 9, 2019
- Date
- November 9, 2019
- Creator
- Carmen Bolt; Buddy Moore
- Description
- Buddy Moore, former Park View resident, talks about his time living in the neighborhood. Born and raised in the Cardozo area, Buddy moved to Park View to raise his family. He reflects on the drug epidemic that hit in the neighborhood in the 1980s, and discusses forming an Orange Hat group to educate those in the neighborhood doing "negative things." He feels that this group made a difference in cutting down the violence in the neighborhood. Buddy talks about the "great positive" changes he's seen in Petworth/Park View regarding new businesses, redevelopment, and gentrification. To long time residents, he encourages them to "hang on" as the city government works on housing.

- Creator
- Utagawa Yoshitaki/ 歌川 芳滝 (Signature: Yoshitaki ga/芳瀧画)

- Nishiki-e (Multicolored Print), ink and color on paper. In the background the titular dock is busy with crowds of workers moving various goods on and off small ships waiting in the water. Behind them are two open warehouses and the roofs of a vast cityscape. In the foreground the side of a building is slightly cropped on the far right-side and several townspeople cross a bridge along the lower edge of the composition.

- Dojima Rice market
- Creator
- Utagawa Kunikazu/ 歌川国員 (Signature: Kunikazu ga/ 国員画)
- Description
- Nishiki-e (Multicolored Print), ink and color on paper. Depicted is an extremely zoomed in view of a set of steps leading up to a gateway, the edge of which can be seen in the upper left. Three men are lower down the steps presumably on their way up to join the crowd already inside. The crowd is only seen from the waist down and closely packed together suggesting a chaotic scene. As the title suggests this is a scene from the Dojima rice market or rice exchange. This was the center of Edo system of rice brokers, which could be understood as the forerunning to the modern banking system.
